Single-column footing is applied widely in foundation engineering due to its easy construction and low cost. Single-column footing on soil is frequently used for architecture below six layers, which is maturely studied and is able to meet the engineering application on soil. Subgrade is mainly rock in these areas such as Chongqing, it is often seen that single-column footing is utilized in High-rise Building Construction. Obviously, load on rock is far more than load on soil. However, theory of single-column footing on rock subgrade is relatively deficient, and it is failed to put forward reasonable failure modes so far. Foundation design lacks a sound theoretical basis and calculation method, which could cause a lot of design flaws, so it is difficult to ensure structural safety and reduce construction expense.Accordingly, this thesis studies about failure modes for single-column footing on rock based on experiment and theory to put forward some valuable theories. Main works are summarized as follows:1. Lots of works are carried out on research status of single-column footing, especially on the failure modes of single-column footing.2. An in-situ large scale test is designed and conducted, massive test data is obtained, then the crack distribution and the base reaction are analyzed.3. A new failure mode is proposed, namely failure mode of expansibility, the base reaction is further improved and the formula of capacity is derived.4. Related theoretical calculation and finite element analysis are performed, which proves that test specimen and failure mode of expansibility are correct.
