With the dense development of urban land and the continuously increase of urban motorization, urban traffic congestion problems are becoming prominent. Nowadays, many aspects of urban traffic congestion have attracted the attention of relevant academics. Achievements have been made on theoretical and practical applications. However, the traffic congestion problems caused by pick-up traffic flow of primary and secondary schools during peak hours haven't received extensive attention. The pick-up traffic flow of primary and secondary schools have the characteristics of short-term and intense, and the influencing time is approaching the rush hour of shuttle transportation. In this case, the urban transportation network can easily jammed by the pick-up traffic during peak hour, and even result in a more serious bottleneck effect. This paper studies the characteristics of pick-up behavior, the basic concepts and elements of this behavior are defined. The influencing factors of pick-up probability\traffic model and time distribution characteristic of pick-up flows are analyzed respectively. A binary-logistic model and a pick-up demand model are founded on the basis of influencing factors analysis. The general pick-up probability model parameter assignment methods and modeling process are given as well. What is more, this paper determines the fitting methods of arrival rate and leaving rate functions, founds pick-up traffic peak computing model in two cases(with and without staggered hours strategy) on which basis. The collective space demand model and the determination methods of space demand parameters are raised according to parking demand predictive theories. Then, feasible collective space set forms are designed due to the combination of parking space set methods and the specific circumstance of school pick-up behavior. This paper uses vissim for simulation modeling. Due to the operation results and the evaluation indexes (such as delay, travel time etc) of the simulation, the performances of roads\crossings and even the whole network are compared before and after collective space set for school. This essay analyzes the characteristics of pick-up traffic flow, which can be used on the collective space setting and design for new-built schools or school renovations. Through the reasonable supply of collective space, the interference to the road traffic caused by pick-up traffic can be reduced to a minimum, so as to reduce or even eliminate traffic congestion around schools caused by pick-up traffic and improve the capacity of urban road network during peak hours.
