With the development of awareness of heritage conservation, a lot of work on protecting heritage building is carrying on in China. However, traditional craft is gradually vanishing, and the lack of raw materials, mismanagement and other factors are becoming serious problems for conservation projects in China. Hence, it is an important issue in China that how to maintain the architectural heritage and apply modern technology to restore the damaged heritage buildings.Although New Zealand is a small country in the world, it is a nation which has high-level heritage buildings. New Zealand was colonized by British in the past. Therefore, New Zealand inherited a relatively advanced architectural heritage protection, restoration theory and traditional crafts. Meanwhile, with the continuous development of a wide range of modern technology, New Zealand gradually has an excellent performance of emergency rescue in conservation projects now, especially for post-earthquake restoration. After research of conservation and renovation of these buildings for several decades, New Zealand has had an effective system about heritage conservation in aspects of regulation and technology. This thesis tries to provide some New Zealand advanced systems to our country in order to improve heritage conservation in China. There are four aspects in this thesis. Firstly, the first chapter reports about New Zealand heritage history and indicates current development and their conservation theories. From the point of view of theory, it will introduce the overview of domestic and international conservation of historic buildings. Secondly, through the field investigation, the second chapter reports successful experience of the historic building conservation. The third chapter selects some cases like the New Zealand Arts Centre and deeply analysis specific technical measures. Finally, the fourth chapter indicates the disadvantages on consciousness and operations in our country, and sum up the design methods of renovation in New Zealand, through studying large numbers of examples from the aspects like tourism, the value of heritage products and heritage trails.
