One of the disaster power supply system often suffer is Transmission Line Icing, to minimize disaster losses, detecting Transmission Line Icing situation timely and taking appropriate measures is necessary. Therefore, it is important to develop a reliable and timely online Icing detection system. The methods that have limitations based on mechanical model and image analysis are now used around the world. According to the characteristic of optical fiber sensors, this paper introduce a Icing detection system consisted of optical fiber sensors.Firstly, this paper describes Icing meteorological conditions, fundamental theory of icing formation and the prediction model of Icing thickness. A optical fiber detection method based on simulated wire is developed, which through the relation of the situation of simulated wire and Transmission Line detect Transmission Line Icing. Then, the work of designing optical fiber Icing sensor that have the advantage of wide measure range and finishing its mechanical structure is accomplished. The four sensors are mounted at the simulated wire’s different positions to get the multipoint Icing situation. The circuit of signal acquisition processing and analysis has the function to convert photoelectric signal and to acquire temperature signal of simulated wire’s different parts. The PC online monitoring system based on MFC of Visual Studio IDE is aimed at realizing data exchange, displaying real-time value and dynamic curve, then saving data to back-end database and so on.The timely detection of Transmission Line Icing could give reliable data to the power supply department to do the job of Transmission Line anti-icing and deicing. A lot of experiment is done to verify the feasibility, reliability and stability of the designed detection system, to measure the sensitivity of detecting ice. Through optical fiber sensor icing tests in the freezer, the response characteristic about icing thickness of optical fiber sensor is got. As well as the icing tests of the complete detection system based on simulated wire are done to verify the stability and feasibility of the complete system. Extensive laboratory experiment provide basic data and tests to realize the system used in the actual environment.
