With the development of construction and building technology, many novel and peculiar architectural types have been emerging in front of our eyes. The long-span steel structure which is studied in this paper belongs to one of these types. Temporary supports are often needed to build in the construction process of long cantilever structures. A process of structure transformation often involves in the dismantling of temporary structures. So, in order to ensure the safety of the structure construction and feasibility and to implement the structure design configuration, It is necessary to make numerical simulation and to do site monitoring of the construction process.A long cantilever steel structure is researched in this paper. The following research works are carried out: Firstly, on the basis of comparing the different temporary support structure types, a type of temporary support structure was designed. Through numerical simulation, the largest position of internal force and deformation, buckling modes and the vibration period is concluded in this paper to ensure the security and stability of the temporary support structure. Secondly, with finite element software Midas/Civil, birth and death element simulation method was used in a full-cycle construction process simulation of a long cantilever steel structure.The construction process was divided into 16 stages,and the largest positions of section stress and vertical deflection were analyzed in each stage. Thirdly, based on the results of the analysis of its key position, a construction monitoring was carried out. By comparing calculated values and measured values, it is found that the result is in line with expectations, so the numerical simulation method adopted in this paper is proved to be feasible. Through analysis and study of this paper, it will has certain reference value and guiding significance for the usage of the finite element method in the future similar structures.
