The composites are increasingly used in various kinds of fields for their outstanding characteristics. Structural connections of composites are inevitably used unless the structures are monolithic or global fabricated. However, the connections are the weakest part in the structrue design. Therefore, the design of connections is one of the key factors of structure design. In this paper, the three-dimensional finite element model of riveting, adhesive bonding and adhesive-rivet hybrid joining of composite laminates is highlighted based on implicit nonlinear module of MSC.patran/ Nastran software. The model is used to calculate stress field and displacement field with different connections. Through the comparison of the data obtained, the contingent failure model and its location under different connection are disscussed. Besides, the strength analysis of these finite element models are carried out.The main contents are as follows:1. The three-dimensional finite element models of bi-riveting and adhesive-rivet hybrid joining structure of composite laminates is made. The status of stress distribution around the hole with various joining and the stress differential curve in X and Z directions with different preload is analysed to determine the direction of stress concentration. A prediction of the most likely area to damage of the composite laminates is hence made. By comparing the status of stress distribution of the bi-riveting one and the adhesive-rivet hybrid joining one, the characteristics of stress distribution are discussed.2. Based on the analysis of double-rivets holes, three-dimensional finite element models of adhesive, multi-riveting and adhesive-rivet hybrid joining structure of composite laminates is made. The stress field and displacement fields under different connections are compared to determine the possible mode of failure and the most likely failure position. Besides, an damage detection of stress concentration area is made.3. Strength of different connections are compared with preliminary damage analysis of adhesive-rivet hybrid joining. Additionally, the strength of different preload on adhesive-rivet hybrid joining is discussed to provide a reference for the connection structure design of aircrafts.
