With the rapid development of China's civil aviation industry, there appear a growing number of multi-runway airports, many of them have chosen closely spaced parallel runway configuration in order to accommodate the restrictions of land use. The traditional layout of closely spaced parallel runways requires frequent runway crossings on daily operation. Those crossings not only have safety risks but also affect the efficiency of airport operations during busy hours. It is in this context, a new taxiway that End-Around Taxiway(hereinafter referred to EAT) has been proposed at some foreign airports in recent years, among china's domestic airports, only Shanghai Hongqiao Airport has planned EAT, but due to various reasons, has not yet achieved physical linking and thus did not put into operation.Firstly, combined with examples of foreign airports, analyzed the configuration and operation rules of EAT as well as its positive effects on reducing controller's workload and carbon emissions, also elaborated its significant influence in increasing runway capacity and other aspects; Secondly, according to various standards and geometric characteristics of aircrafts and flight path data, analyzed the clearance impact of EAT, based clearance standards includes the obstacle limitation surfaces(OLS) of ICAO Annex 14, the United States Standard for Terminal Instrument Procedures(TERPS) and PANS-OPS(Air Navigation Services-aircraft Operations) of ICAO; Thirdly, along with the solution methods, a model of closely spaced parallel runways operating efficiency around the EAT was established and had proved the advantages of using EAT; fourthly, illustrated the low elevation EAT, multi- entrance EAT and dynamic operation EAT, and came up with corresponding optimized EAT configuration; moreover, the analytical tools SIMMOD was used to calculated the efficiency of EAT by modeling and simulation, verified the significant role that EAT played in improving the airport operation efficiency.
