As more and more HVDC projects put into operation in our country, the large-scale of AC/DC hybrid power system may lead to the transient voltage stability and regional power oscillation problems, which is not allow to ignored. This article introduces the basic principles of the STATCOM with energy storage, set up a model for it in PSASP simulation platform, and applied the model in the simulation of power grid. It is intended to verify the STATCOM with energy storage can improve power system's dynamic characteristics, static and transient stability, and improve the ability to increase the system's damping and other aspects in the the complex power system.Based on the problems may come up in the process of China's AC/DC hybrid power system, this article firstly summarizes the FACTS dynamic reactive power compensation measures that we commonly used at home and abroad. Then analysis the advantages and disadvantages of different measures, and put forward the application of STATCOM with energy storage can make up for the inadequacy of existing reactive compensation measures, solve the problem of voltage stability in AC/DC hybrid power system and the power oscillations of the exchange lines.This article study the control functions, structure and principles of the main circuit of the STATCOM with energy storage, and derived the mathematical model of it, and also discussed the current decoupling control method which can be achieved on the power system of four-quadrant compensation. On the theoretical basis, we built a model of the STATCOM with energy storage based on PSASP power system simulation platform. The function of the STATCOM with energy storage to enhance the stability of the 3 machine 7 nodes system were demonstrated and validated its operating results in a complex power system in the HVDC transmission project of Hubei Power Grid. It is found the STATCOM with energy storage can really improve system voltage stability level, but also restrain the AC line's power oscillations.In addition, this article also discussed the installation location and capacity allocation problem of the STATCOM with energy storage. In considering the cost of installation and control effect, we propose to configure a distributed installation of the STATCOM with energy storage, which means install the device in the main voltage node of the system, and many devices can work in harmony. It can not only provides protection for the voltage stability of main voltage node in the system, but also maintain the voltage level of the surrounding system nodes. In addition, the STATCOM with energy storage is configured according to the principle of the superposition of multiple node capacity can meet the compensation capacity under the power grid's most serious failure. It is possible to reduce costs, while ensuring the stability level of the system, which will provide certain guiding significance to the engineering application of the STATCOM with energy storage for future.
