Two stage matrix converter(TSMC) attracts more and more researchers with its unique advantages. Compared with the traditional AC-AC converter, it has much advantage, such as lack of dc-link capacitors for energy storage, compact size, bidirectional power flow, adjustable input power factor and so on. Applying TSMC in start generator(SG) system forming TSMC-SG system has great significance. This paper focuses on the control strategies of reverse generation in TSMC-SG system.In this paper, the topology structure, basic principle and modulation strategy of TSMC are introduced. Two structures of TSMC-SG system can be obtained because of asymmetric topology of TSMC: SG located in bidirectional switch side and SG located in unidirectional switch side. The advantages and disadvantages of each are analyzed. Analysis results show that the structure one is more likely over current when starting however the structure two can effectively realize starting generation. As a result, the structure two is selected for further study. The principle of generation is studied and the mathematical model of system is deduced. On this basis, the basic generation control strategy is designed.For the problem that under light load system cannot work properly, the feature of basic generation control strategy is analyzed. Because of voltage transmission characteristics of TSMC, system cannot work normally when the load is lighter. After power range of basic generation control strategy is given, new control strategy which can broaden power generation range is proposed in order to ensure the system can work properly either light load or rated load. The model of TSMC-SG system is built in Matlab/Simulink environment. The simulation results are in line with the theoretical analysis and the feasibility of the control strategy is verified.Finally, principle prototype of TSMC-SG system is built and the implementation method of the hardware and software of the system is introduced in detail. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method in this paper is validated by extensive experimental results.
