As an important material handling equipment, hoisting machinery is playing an increasingly important role in modern industrial production, along with the high-speed development of the national economy, the continuous expansion of production and the unprecedented prosperity of metallurgy, shipbuilding, turbine, petrochemical and other industries. General gantry crane occupies an important position in the national economic development for its large, wide application in lifting product models. In recent years, China's gantry crane is in a state of excess capacity and depressed industry development, the European crane won a higher market share instead, which make the crane industry in our country faced the great challenges but also encountered great opportunities.In this paper, the main research objective is based on the lightweight of metal structure of U type gantry crane, which has great advantages in carrying capacity and the leg space among general gantry cranes. The research makes a discussion on the issue of differences between China's traditional crane and European crane in terms of structure, process, performance, design methods, etc. The advantages of European crane have been drawn in the research on new structures, new lifting technology, new structural design methods and intelligent structure optimization methods of general gantry crane. And the CAD structure design software of general gantry crane has been developed using C# high level programming language through.NET platform. From the level of crane structure design, the crane's principle of ‘reduction, reuse, recycling' should be realized through the material, the new structure, the design theory and design method based on the greening of the life cycle of crane, which was the mainstream of the future development trend. The research provides theoretical support for the development of China's traditional crane transformation. This article's main research contents are as follows:1)The new lightweight structure of gantry crane should be discussed based on the system study of new lightweight European crane and the structure of the general gantry crane form the main girders, the legs, the upper and lower beams, the car and trolley running mechanism, the connection mode, walkway, railing, cab, etc. The structure model of new general gantry crane was established based on SolidWorks.2)In order to achieve the safety, economy and efficiency of general gantry crane's hoisting construction, some improvements have been made to the integral lifting technique of large gantry crane form the innovative of the structure design, and a new overall lifting scheme applicable to the general gantry crane has been put forward.3)The metal structure design of U type general gantry crane should be done by the two structure design methods as the allowable stress method and limit state method. The installation load, disassembly load and transport load have an effect on the crane metal structure which should be taken into account in computation load. Limit state method should be applied to the checking of structure fatigue strength, static strength and fatigue strength of connecting element. The two design methods should be analyzed from the perspective of weight reduction.4)An optimization mathematical model of the gantry crane's metal structure should be established. The optimization design should combine three kinds of intelligent optimization algorithms and two kinds of structure design methods, which are DE, CDE, FOA, and allowable stress method and limit state method. Make sure the structure has the lightest weight and meet the performance at the same time. Then analyze the optimized results and evaluate the three kinds of intelligent optimization algorithms.5)The CAD structure design software of U type general gantry crane should be developed using C# high level programming language through.NET platform and WPF. The design software combines two kinds of structure design methods and three kinds of intelligent optimization algorithms and considers the various factors of steel grades, track type, structure, etc.
