Auto panels are an important part of automotive. Panels are all manufactured by panel dies. Therefore, the design quality and efficiency of panel dies are important factors in automobile development and production process. A panel die usually consists of more than one thousand parts. According to the traditional design approach, panel die designers should design each part by manual. The traditional design approach includes too much repetitive work which is detrimental to the economization on time. That's why the traditional design approach has seriously hindered the improvement of design efficiency. For the moment, a few panel die design system based on computer aided design(hereinafter referred to as CAD) software have been developed. But, as the product lifecycle management(hereinafter referred to as PLM) system is gradually being popularized, the lack of PLM system support in these die design systems become a major problem troubling panel die design enterprises.Based on the in-depth investigation and analysis of panel die structure and design process, automatic design method for panel dies is proposed in this thesis. And the system structure of this panel die design system, as well as the design method and key points of main function modules, is expounded. After studying the way data exchange between NX and Teamcenter, parameter design method and knowledge engineering techniques, the author applied these theories to the development of this system. At last, the automation design system of panel dies is realized.This system is developed by NX OPEN API, and can run on NX 9.0 and Teamcenter 10.0. Designers can use this system to rapid design the main structure of panel dies, such as punches, blank holders, inserts and some standard parts. At present, this system has been put into application. It is proved that this system can meet the basic requirements of enterprises. The panel die design cycle has been shortened greatly. And the design quality and efficiency of panel dies have been significantly improved.
