In China, urban environment has been deteriorated by the rapid development of cities, intensification of population problem and acute shortage of land resources. In order to solve these intensified environmental problems in urban areas and alleviate urban land problem, the vertical planting competent of solving all of the foregoing problems is born at the right time. Vertical planting, a mode for purpose of improving ecological environment and of breaking through traditional forms of landscape, is capable of enriching special structure of landscape. The main ecological functions of vertical planting are: dust absorption, filtration of noise, attenuation of city's heat island effect, supply of harmonious ecological space and improvement of humans' living space. This study of vertical greening in Guangzhou and Wuhan typical cases, which is representative of several engineering technical investigation and analysis. Select Industrial Park in Wuhan vertical green wall green ecological benefits evaluation. The main results were as follows:1. There are 6 different forms of wall greening, which include module form, paving form, climbing form or hanging form, flower arrangement form and sack form. Each form of greening also possesses other characteristics. Generally speaking, the growth substratum used for wall greening has several types such as artificial light soil, foam substratum, fiber substratum and soilless culture with nutrient solution, etc. As for principles in choice of plants, it is preferable to choose undershrub and herbaceous plants of drought tolerance and strong cold resistance, shallow-rooted plants which are light-demanding and barren-resistant, plants which are capable of resisting wind, resisting falling down and resisting accumulated water, and plants that are evergreen and can survive in winter open air. The irrigation system, providing the water amount for all the plants in the greened wall in daily life, has 3 operation modes in total, including full-automatic mode, artificial presetting mode and artificial mode.2. In this article, several typical examples are selected to analyze in detail the application effects and techniques of vertical planting in urban afforestation and theecological benefits created by vertical planting.(1) In the afforesting walls in Wuhan Industrial Park and Guangdong East Station, modular construction form is adopted, the characteristics of which are that the modules are easy to disassemble and maintain and that the labor intensity of maintenance is mostly reduced as the pleasing greening purpose is realized in the meantime. In the green walls in Guangzhou Flower City Square and Panyu Children's Park, non-woven fabric nutrient solution type system is adopted, the advantages of which are unconstrained patterns breaking through the fixed modular ones, free shaping of planting and better sense of wholeness of finished plants. However, such maintenance is difficult, the technique requirements for constructing and maintaining the green walls are high, the construction is cost-taking, and they are hard to popularize to the public.(2) Furthermore, in this article the research results of the tests for temperature-decreasing effect. In Wuhan Industrial Park, one point was set to test the wall temperature and humidity in two seasons for purpose of studying the influence of wall afforestation on temperature and humidity. The results indicated that, when the outdoor air temperature is 36°C, the surface temperature of architecture without afforesting coverage can be over 50°C at most; while the temperature of external wall with afforesting coverage is around 30°C. Thus, it can be seen that generally the wall surface temperature with plants coverage can reduce by about 6°C, showing obvious effects of temperature decrease. It is discovered, by means of adopting t-test method of paired samples for comparison with the two sides of afforested gate walls' temperature, that, the temperature of the left side wall is remarkably lower than that of the right side wall, and the vegetation coverage degree of the left side wall is obviously higher than that of the right side wall. Therefore, the most probable reason that causes the temperature difference of the left and right side walls should be the different vegetation coverage degree of them.
