The urban traffic congestion has become a common international problem.The intersection act as the key node of the urban road network,in which different direction traffic flow non-motor vehicle flow and pedestrian flow are intertwined,seriously affect its traffic capacity.Left traffic flow at the intersection generate more conflict points,result in a higher accident rate and its impact on the intersection capacity is larger.With the increase of traffic demand,the traffic jam situation has not been improved yet,although the conventional turn left traffic organization has largely improved the utilization rate of the intersection.In the exploration of the left-turn traffic organization,the application of the left-turn reverse variable lane has greatly improved the space-time utilization of road resources,however,there are still some problems need to be improved during the process of use.This paper studies the left turn traffic organizations on the basis of reading a large number of relevant literature,summing up and comparing the existing research results on the design of the left turn dedicated lane,the design of the left turn dedicated phase,the design of the left turn waiting area,the variable lane,forbidden left turn and so on.Firstly,the paper analyzes the traffic characteristics of left-turn traffic and compares the left-turn traffic flow characteristics with left-turn reverse lane and conventional left-turn traffic organization.Using the video capture and image processing survey method to get the vehicle saturation head distance and traffic capacity of the left-turn reverse variable lane,and pave the way for further adjust its design plan.Study the conventional left-turn traffic organization according to its characteristics and principle.Then,study the design of left-turn reverse variable lane:analyze the basic conditions of setting left-turn reverse variable lane from the aspects of intersection geometrical and saturation condition.Study on the flow conditions of setting left-turn reverse variable lane by the queuing and probability theory.Study on the channelization design of left-turn reverse variable lane on the basis of the channelization characteristics of left-turn traffic,and analyze the length and width of different cases.Based on the analysis of the traffic characteristics of the left turn reverse variable lane,proposing the adjustment method of the pre-signal phase and the intersection signal timing scheme of the left-turn reverse variable lane design scheme.In order to ensure the smooth implementation of lane design and signal control scheme,the installation of supporting facilities such as induction and monitoring of variable lane is analyzed.In the end,the paper optimizes the design scheme of the left-turn reverse variable lane by using the crossroads of Jingshi Road and Shungeng Road in Jinan City.The VISSIM software is used to simulate the current traffic organization scheme and the optimized design scheme,and the simulation results are compared.
