As an important resource and environment carrier,rivers have multifunctional features,such as water storage and supply,flood prevention and drainage,biodiversity,transportation and recreation.Thus,protection of reasonable development of river resources are very important for both mankind survival and social sustainable development.Over the past few decades,however,most of the rivers in China have been polluted or destroyed to some extents due to the intense anthropogenic activities.The rivers are facing with serious ecosystem degradation and water pollution problems,which have become a major obstacle to the sustainable development of the society,economy and environment,and pose a significant risk to human health.Hang-Jia-Hu Plain is the largest stacked plain in Zhejiang Province,which locates at Tianmu Mountain to the east,Taihu Lake to the south,Qiantang River and Hangzhou Bay to the north.As an important commodity grain supply base,this area is densely covered with river network,and well known for the reputation of ‘the land of fish and rice,the mansion of silk and satin'.However,with the rapid development of the regional economic society,the rivers in Hang-Jia-Hu Plain have been polluted,resulting in an array of water ecology and water environment problems.Therefore,it's an urgent to restore the damaged river ecosystem back to a healthy status.By taking the Wuzhen river located in Hang-Jia-Hu Plain as a case study,this article conducted a detailed demonstration project study for restoration of the river.Through data collecting,field observing and monitoring,the environmental and aquatic factors of the river were investigated in detail,including water quality factors,hydrological indicators,habitat,pollution load,characteristic of sediments and aquatic plant diversity.Several engineering and technological schemes,including sewage collection,ecological floating bed,combined biological and ecological treatment system and aeration oxygen,were described in detail,mostly focusing on technological process.The article also provides a description of restoration effect to prove the feasibility and practicability of the project.
