Damping is a term describing the energy dissipation of a structure during vibration.Because of the complexity of the damping mechanism,it is usually simplified to an easy analyzing damping model in engineering practice.Viscous damping is widely used for its simple form and convenient analysis. However, those idealized mathematical models can not fully reflect the complex energy-dissspating properties of actual structures. Therefore,a variety of damping models, such as convolutionary non-viscous damping, are proposed. In this paper, the applicability of convolutionary non-viscous damping in building structures is studied based on experiment and numerical simulation.A modal superposition method based on a mixed symmetric state-space formalation of system with convolutionary damping theory is proposed. This method effectively reduces the dimension of the formed state-space equation.A numerical example is given to illustrate effectiveness of the mixed method.A group of viscoelastic dampers and viscous dampers are designed and manufactured for shaking table tests. The performance of the two types of dampers in different loading cases are tested firstly and the parameters of the convolutionary non-viscous damping model are obtained.A two-story steel frame added with viscoelastic dampers and viscous dampers respectively are tested on shaking table to obtain the model response and damper response.Corresponding numerical models of the test structure with two types of dampers are established by MATLAB,and the simulation of the shake table test is carried out.Comparsion of the experimental response and numerical response shows that the convolutionary non-viscous damping model is superior to the viscous damping model in describing the daming and hence the response of the test structure.
