With the Arctic oil resources constantly being discovered, various types of polar ships are designed. In order to be able to resist the ice load effectively,Polar ships must be strictly strengthened. The current polar ship design must follow the IACS Polar Class Rules, which can guide the determination of the ice load and the design of structures. For polar ship designers,a deep understanding of IACS PC Rules, including ice load design and structural design concepts and methods, helps to predict the ice load more accurately and design more economical polar ships. From point of ice loads and anti-ice structure design, the main contents in this paper include:(1)The theory background of IACS PC Rules is introduced, including the theory basis and calculation method of ice loads. The ice loads of the ice belt are calculated for a polar ship.(2)The structural design requirements of PC Rules are studied, and the capacity model of frames is introduced, and the existing problems are pointed out.By means of nonlinear finite element analysis, the mechanical behaviors of a single fame and a frame in a panel are compared, and the conservation of the Rules is analyzed and the improvement is advised.(3)The effects of fame spacing on minimum thickness, shear area and modulus are studied. The influence of fame spacing on the weight of side structures in the ice belt is studied, and the method of structural optimization design is explored. At the same time, the effects of PC on structural design is studied.(4)Based on the ABS ice guide and FMA rules, the nonlinear finite element analysis is used to explore a no-bracket design in the ice belt from the perspective of plastic design. The proposed no-bracket design can replace the design according to the rules, which helps reduce the production cost.According to the result of numerical simulation on ice load, the preferable ice load is advised for some special cases.
