With the rapid development of the auto industry and wireless communication technology,Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks(VANET)as an important research content of intelligent transportation system, more and more attention has been paid. The existing VANET related research is concerned about the urban vehicles are mainly buses and taxis, there are few studies on private vehicles because of the lack of GPS data.Private vehicles as an important part of urban vehicles, the law of motion is quite different from that of public vehicles,we proposed a novel framework of urban VANET termed Location based Urban VANET(LUV)according to the characteristics of private cars based on GPS data, divide area reasonably is one of the core content to build LUV.This paper first pre-process the GPS data of 8900 private cars in Changsha, use the trace data after screening and completion, analyzed the movement characteristics of the private car are analyzed and verified from the time of vehicle activity and the location of stay.In order to determine and divide the LUV area reasonably, this paper presents a method of extracting the vehicle frequently accessed location by using clustering algorithm, the distribution of the locations as the basis for area division. At the same time,a grid-based area division method is proposed, the city is divided into uniform grids to quantify the size of the area, and control the size of each area through the area segmentation algorithm.Vehicle communicates with other vehicles when it stays in the area, through the movement of the vehicle between the accessed locations to provide a stable connection between the areas. Finally,we uses the existing GPS data as the experimental data set, divide the city by a variety of grid granularity and different area sizes after extracting the accessed location. The connectivity between the areas is used as the evaluation index to comparison and analysis the results of the different cases. The experimental results screened two grid granularity with better effect, excessive grid size will affect the quality of connectivity between the areas, too large cannot guarantee the direct communication within the vehicles in the area.Area division requires not only the quality of the network communication, but also constrained by the number of urban vehicles and on-board equipment.
