Controlling shipping costs is a long-term goal of shipping companies.In general,there are mainly two aspects to reduce costs.On the one hand,during the ship's operational phase,the specific studies mainly as follows,fleet planning,route matching,ship scheduling,speed optimization,shipping network optimization and so on;On the other hand,during the ship design and construction stage,the specific studies mainly as follows,ship main scale demonstration,hull line design,optimization of marine equipment selection and so on.Since the main engine as the core device of ship's power system,the main carrier of fuel oil consumption,so it's closely related with shipping costs(Controlling the shipping costs is to control the fuel cost to some extent).It is of great significance to study the optimal selection of main engine to improve the ship's operational competitiveness level during its entire life cycle.This paper takes the container ship which is one of the three main vessel types in shipping industry as the research object.To quantify marine main engine selection,explore a new process and a new method for the optimal selection and make up for the shortage of the existing qualitative methods based on the experts' subjective experience as the research purpose.To realize the best match of ship,main engine and propeller as the final effect.Firstly,it reviews some related literatures and sums up the present situation about domestic and foreign research,and points out the research direction and main research contents of the paper.Secondly,the basic theory about ship main engine selection is studied and analyses the impact of constant speed line,the match between main engine with propeller,propeller characteristic curves and so on to determine the selection scheme of the target ship.All about this is to make sure that the alternative engines are technically feasible.Thirdly,the key factors influencing the main engine selection are analyzed in detail based on the aspects of design speed,ship energy efficiency design index(EEDI)and the whole life cycle cost(LCC).Furthermore,the energy efficiency design index calculation program is developed based on VB visual interface.Considering the importance of the EEDI and LCC,regarding them as a screening condition respectively to remove some alternative engines of the target ship which have poor performance;Finally,based on the idea of multi-attribute information integration,considering the technical,environmental,economical,physical and guaranteed requirements,a multi-level index system for main engine selection is established and achieve the final selection of alternative engines of the target ship based on the ANP-ERA model built in this paper.Finally,a 2500 TEU container ship is taken as an example to elaborate the whole process of main engine selection.After two screening and one final selection,the optimal selection scheme of main engine for the target ship is determined,that is MAN 7G60ME-C9.5 whose comprehensive utility score is 0.8012,corresponding to the specified maximum continuous rating and speed combination is 14730kw and 89r/min,and matching a 5-blade fixed pitch propeller whose diameter is 7.49 meters.
