Rim driven thruster is a hot research project in the realm of ship propulsion today,which has advantages of compact structure,flexible installation,high power density,excellent vibration and noise performance.It has wide application prospect in engineering.In this paper,the hydrodynamic performance characteristics of rim driven thruster are discussed,with reference to the research method of ducted propeller.Firstly,the surface panel method for the prediction of marine propeller is introduced systematically,and a program is written based on low-order potential surface panel method.Taking AU5-50 and DTRC4119 as examples,the reliability of surface panel method is validated,by comparing the experimental results with the calculation.Secondly,this paper summarizes three methods for predicting the steady hydrodynamic performance of ducted propeller,and a program is written based on directly solving the potential of combination method.Then calculation accuracy of fixed pitch wake model and simplified deformed wake model are compared.The steady hydrodynamic performance of the multi type ducted propeller is predicted by the equal pitch wake vortex model,the results of which show that this program has a good calculation accuracy.Thirdly,the paper designs a simple modeling method to build the calculation model of rim driven thruster and established a surface panel method for predicting the steady performance of rim drive thruster,according to the calculation method of ducted propeller.A corresponding program is written,the calculation results shows that,the open-water curve of the RDT is similar to that of ducted propeller,but the thrust coefficient and the torque coefficient are larger.Last but not the least,the paper studies the effect to the hydrodynamic performance of rim driven thruster of pitch ratio,diameter ratio of inner tip,rake and skew of blades and summarized the effect laws of each parameter,finally putting forward corresponding suggestions about rim driven thruster design.
