The rapid growth of metropolitan areas around world face the problems of the extensive urbanization.Many cites are coupled with ecological degradation,reduction of vegetation and climate abnormities.According to the United Nations Environment Program(UNEP),building industry accounts 40% of gross social energy consumption,which also leads to a phenomenon known as urban heat island effect.There are certain studies which have shown that vertical garden is excellent performance on regional climate regulation.The appearance of vertical gardens not only increases the urban green ratio but also bridges the gap between human and natural environment.However,due to lack of the climate responsive strategies,most of vertical garden projects are not able to balance the initial goal of artistic and climate regulation.This thesis is a primarily a research of vertical garden design based on the urban microclimate conditions.The major research methods involve: site investigation,software simulations and relative summarizations of literatures,which could contribute to build the guidelines of vertical garden design in the future.The following is a list of works that author is mainly focused on:(1)Identification of related literature to identify the relationship between the vertical garden design and microclimate elements.Attempt to provide design ideas from four aspects as follows: Air temperature,solar radiation,relative air humidity.(2)Extended a general method of composition principle of vegetation layer which known as ‘Point-line-Surface model'.Meanwhile,for the aesthetic sense design,author identified the key concepts that divide in environmental aesthetics,ecological aesthetics,horticulture aesthetics and structural aesthetics.(3)Associated with network resources and related literatures,this paper sums up 135 species of heliophiles plants and 63 species of ombrophyte plants which are both appropriate be using as vertical garden design in hot summer and cold winter regions in China.(4)For a vertical garden design project,the author attempted to provide four major climate responsive design strategies based on Ecotect analysis software,the four strategies were:1)The assistant overshadow design;2)The thermal buffering structure design;3)The seasonal prevailing wind design 4)The vegetation evapotranspiration design.
