The global climate change has a great impact on water resource and ecology environment all around the world, especially in arid areas. The studies on the spatio-temporal change of water resource and ecology environment,as well as the spatio-temporal coupling between water resource and ecology environment, are always focal points and hot spots in the Hydrology and Ecology. However, the shortcomings of the meteorological and hydrological datas bring difficulties to the studies mentioned above. This article take Shule river basin,a typical arid inland river basin,as study area, while respectively take the Terrestrial Water Storage Changes(TWSC)inverted by GRACE data and Enhanced Vegetation Index(EVI)calculated by MODIS data as the indicators of water resource and ecology environment,to analyze the studies mentioned above. The study found that:(1)Both TWSC and EVI have obvious periodicity, seasonality and tendency on different temporal scale,(2)Both TWSC and EVI have obvious complicacy and heterogeneity on different spatial scales.(3)In recent 15 years, there was a significant increasing trend on vegetation greenness in the Shule river basin, while at the same time, total water storage measured by satellites has been continually decreasing.(4)The TWSC and EVI showed a moderate negative correlation at the whole basin scale, while they showed no correlation in both of the south mountain region and the north mountain region, and height negative correlation in the central plain region at partition scale. In addition,at pixel scale, the TWSC and EVI in the irrigated area of central plain region showed a very high negative correlation, then the artificial forest and the artificial grassland. And the correlation in the other areas is not significant.(5)With precipitation patterns remaining stable during the study period, the increasing trend of vegetation and apparent decrease of the terrestrial water storage in Shule river basin can be attributed to the extraction of ground water for human-planted irrigated vegetation. Finally, there is a phenomenon that The TWSC and EVI showed a high negative correlation.(6)Without any other data but GRACE data, the successful monitoring of the drought happened in Shule river basin during 2014 suggests that GRACE data has great feasibility and broad application prospects in the study on terrestrial water storage changes and drought monitoring over small basin.
