| Phyllostachys praecox is one kind of good bamboos for edible shoot with advantages of delicious shoot, early stage and long period of shoot production.Usually,a mulching method has been extensively adopted in the management of Phyllostachys praecoxproduction. When the method adopted, the bamboo farmers could get much higher economic profit from the bamboo cultivation. However,Phyllostachys praecox will show a significant recessionwith the continuous mulching after 3 or 4 years. We hypothesized that the bamboo recession was resulted from the bamboo rhizome up-floating that induced by the soil hypoxia when using the mulching method. Therefore,a drilling method for aeration was proposed to reduce the hypoxia stress on bamboo rhizome growth. The result will be expected helpful for the sustainable bamboo management. Results showed that the mulching method with long term application exerted a great effect on soil acidity, organic matter and cation exchangeable capacity. With the mulching time,a severe acidification occurred at the soil surface layer(0-20 cm).Meantime, the bamboo underground rhizome showed a significant change in structure. The weight and length of bamboo rhizome increased after 3 or 4 years with the mulching, however, the fresh part decreased significantly, suggesting that the mulching technique impaired the bamboo rhizome and hindered the bamboo sustainable production. After the continuous mulching with 3 or 4 years, the bamboo rhizome mainly distributed at the shallow layer of0-10 cm,indicating that the mulching technique stimulated the bamboo rhizome up-floated severely. The mulching technique greatly decreased soil O2 concentration, increased soil respiration, and decreased soil nitrification and denitrification. The bamboo rhizome showed a stress of soil hypoxia that enzyme activity with no relation to O2 increased greatly while enzyme activity in relation with O2 decreased.PSII coefficient of the bamboo leaves decreased significantly with the mulching treatment. When the drilling aeration adopted,a series of bamboo physiological indictors were mitigated. The drilling method could improve the effects of the mulching method on the bamboo growth. The drilling aeration method did not exert a significant effect on the bamboo yield.According to the results of this study, the drilling aeration method is benefit to reduce the negative effect of soil hypoxia and helpful for the bamboo sustainable production.Due to the time limitation, the effect of drilling method on the bamboo growth needs a further study. Moreover, the aeration method should be improved to meet the practical production. |
