The field experiments were carried out in the outside experimental base of agriculture college of Yangzhou university in Shanggao County, Jiangxi Province in 2013-2014, with four indica-japonica hybrid rice, four japonica conventional rice and four indica hybrid rice as materials, systematic comparative studies the differences of yield and its components, population characteristics and rice quality of rice cultivars. The results will provide the scientific basis and technical support for the selection of suitable cultivars and high-yielding cultivation in Shanggao County. The main conclusions were as follows:(1) The yields of different types of rice and its components were significantly different which the indica-japonica hybrid rice>japonica conventional rice>indica hybrid rice. The two types japonica rice building the enough total spikelets through the large spikelets per panicle was a basic way to obtain the higher yield then indica hybrid rice. Different typed-cultivars were all safe to mature, and the whole growing period of japonica rice were longer than indica rice. The total growth periods of indica-japonica hybrid rice and japonica conventional rice significantly extended by 20 and 17 days, respectively. The utilization efficiency of temperature and illumination of different types of rice cultivars at different developmental stages, especially the indica-japonica hybrid rice and japonica conventional rice were higher then indica hybrid rice when after heading.(2) The japonica conventional rice had the most tillers and indica-japonica hybrid rice had the least tillers before jointing stage. After jointing stage, the number of tillers of the japonica rice showed a trend of slow decline, at last, ratio of productive tillers to total tillers of indica-japonica hybrid rice was the highest. The leaf area index of japonica rice were lower than that of indica hybrid rice before jointing stage. Then the leaf area index of japonica rice decreased stably, whose leaf area index, the ratio of effective leaf area andthe ratio of effective leaf area were much higher than those of indica hybrid rice at heading and was above 3.0 at maturity. There were no significant difference in the dry matter accumulation, population growth rate and net assimilation rate of japonica rice combinations and indica hybrid rice before jointing, after heating, the population of two types of japonica rice had obvious advantage than indica hybrid rice.(3) The milling quality, cooking and eating quality and nutrient quality of japonica conventional rice and indica-japonica hybrid rice were better than indica hybrid rice, while the appearance quality change for worse. The RVA profile characteristics of rice demonstrated that peak viscosity, breakdown and final viscosity of japonica rice were higher than indica rice, trough viscosity, peak time of japonica conventional rice were lower than indica rice, the setback and pasting temperature of two types of japonica rice had the same regular pattern. Japonica rice varieties has great potential to improve the rice quality.
