Nowadays,more and more countries in the world are working hard in studying and establishing soil database.Industrialization is one important tendency in the development of soil information system(SIS).Among the developed counties,particularly the United States,nearly all states have set up companies with SIS as the main product and offered customers commercial services.Researches and application of SIS in China are developed rapidly although it started late.In recent years,the Institute of Soil Science of Chinese Academy Sciences(ISSAS)has achieved a great progress in SIS construction and built a systematic SIS of China which is the most complete and systematic soil spatial database in China.The Soil Sample Museum of ISSAS was set up in 1953.It has the most abundant collections of soil samples and is of functions of both research collection and popularization of science.Through the development of decades,it has accumulated a great quality of soil samples and related data.It is time-consuming to search soil sample information for special purposes in a traditionally manual way,but it will be much easier and faster via a soil sample database with information completed and user interface friendly designed.In the tide of managing soil sample information with computer and sharing information in the Internet,there is an urgent need to build a digital soil sample museum(SSM).SSM firstly turns raw soil sample data into digital information,and then exhibits soil samples and transfers soil sample information in the Internet conveniently.This paper,aiming at the collection of soil samples and the construction of management information system of soil samples,using the rapidly-developed compute theory and method,launched the study of soil sample informatization and achieved some significative results,mainly as follows:Soil sample collection and information gathering.The soil samples collected include bottled soil samples,micromorphological soil samples,and whole profile soil samples.The means how soil samples collected and the details how soil samples analyzed were recorded,as well as analysis results and conclusions.The information gathered includes principles and steps of gathering soil information,and tables of soil characters.Design of soil sample database.The design of soil sample database consists of conception construction design,logical construction design,etc.The conception construction of soil samples database bases on soil sample information library,and extends to basic information library,chemistry library,soil nutrients condition library,soil particle composition library,complete chemical analysis library,salinity analysis library,heavy metal content analysis library,organic pollutant content library,and photograph library.The soil sample database is composed of these 10 attribute libraries.The relationships among these 10 attribute libraries were set,and field constraints were also made.Implementation and function of system.The Soil Sample Management Information System is designed based on Soil Sample Database.It consists of user interface design,system operating environment configuration,framework design and function design.Its functions include user management,sample management(sample information input,sample status management,sample information management),metadata management,sample information query,sample information print,sample information export,etc.The system can share information with others.
