In 2015, the most serious forest fire hit Indonesia, which attracts the world's attention to Indonesia forest protection issues. Indonesia's forest commercial development could trace back to the Dutch colonial government period. When Suharto government came to power, large-scale forest development policy have began to implement with the slogan of “development” and Indonesian forest coverage rate has fell sharply. Domestic forest crisis stimulate the birth of Indonesia environmental non-governmental organization(ENGO). ENGOs play as “The third power” in forest protection, they originate from the environmental enthusiasts group in The Dutch colonial administration and the Independent time, the first ENGO was established in 1978.With the implement of the law regarding Societal Organizations in 1985, ENGOs have gained the legal status. And the forest fire in 1997 was another turning point of ENGOs. ENGOs flourish after the fall of Suharto government, they are positioned as the advocacy non-governmental organizations. ENGOs commit themselves to the enforcement of forest law, community forestry empowerment and educations, furthermore, they unite international society and Indonesia government to solve the forest problem, which have scored achievement for the first phase. However, ENGOs face the challenges both home and abroad and themselves. They still have a long way to go in Indonesia forest protection.
