Camellia crapnelliana Tutch. and Camellia edithae Hance are ideal ornamental plants with high conservation values.Thispaper systematically studied the effects ofsubstrate compositions and fertilizer formulations on container seedling qualities of twospecies. The peat, perlite, vermiculite, coconut chaff and mushroom residues were mixed by differentproportions of volume, and different dosages and formulationsof N, P, Kfertilizers were used. In this study,a single-way randomized block design waschosen.Through the analyses of morphological indexs, biomass indexs and physiological indexs, the growth conditions of two species were investigated. The main results were shown as follows:1.We could draw some conclusions after analyzed thephysic-chemical properties of these substrate compositionsand the growth conditions of two species.(1)Different plants required different substrate compositions and the growth conditions of two kinds of containner seedlingswere differentin some way.(2)Peat:vermiculite:coconut chaff=5:3:2,peat: vermiculite:mushroom slag=2:4:4 and peat: vermiculite:mushroom slag=5:3:2 werethe mostfavorablesuccessively for the growth of Camellia crapnelliana Tutch.;however,peat:vermiculite:mushroomresidues=2:4:4,peat:vermiculite:mu shroomresidues=5:3:2,mus-hroom residues: vermiculite: coconut chaff=4:2:4 werethe most favorable successively for Camellia edithae Hance.(3)There were some close relationships between physic-chemical properties of thesesubstrate compositionsand the growth conditions of plants, the former were better, and the latter performed better.(4)Mushroom residues and coconut chaff were cheap, easy to get and great replacements of peat soil for the growth of Camellia edithae Hance.2.Comprehensive analyses of the effects of different fertilizer formulations on thecontainer seedling quality of Camellia crapnelliana Tutch. and Camellia edithae Hance havebeen made, the results show:(1) treatment 4(N2.0 g, P3.0 g K1.0 g, N: P: K = 23:9:15) wasthe most favorable for the growth of both species.(2)within a certain range, the more potash and phosphate fertilizers were used, the more basal diameter of two specieschanged.(3)Over a certain extend, with the increases of the dosage of fertilizers, the growth of two kinds of container seedlings was suppressed instead. Finally, based on the problems encountered in the process of research, some suggestions about cultivation of two kinds of species were given, and the prospects for container seedling future research were put forward.
