It is of great significance for garden plants to improve city green biomass and environmental quality. In this study, common garden plants?mainly ground cover shrubs?in Guangzhou City were studied. The study materials were selected in three residential sites in Guangzhou, including Xiangzhangyuan Park in Zengcheng District, Baoli Golf County Park in Huadu District and Yunshangliying Park in Baiyun District. Leaf nutrient content,soil nutrient content in rhizosphere, photosynthetic physiological characteristics and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were measured and compared among these plants.Plant leaves and soil nutrient condition were evaluated, and then a comprehensive evaluation was made on photosynthetic characteristics among different plants in the same site. The study results may provide theoretical basis for the garden plant species selection and urban greening maintenance and management.There were differences in leaf nutrient content among different plants. Organic carbon content, nitrogen content, phosphorus content and potassium content ranged from 324.02 to519.05 g·kg-1, 8.68 to 23.88 g·kg-1, 1.28 to 8.62 g·kg-1 and 4.96 to 35.58 g·kg-1, respectively,in Xiangzhangyuan Park; those ranged from 396.33 to 487.77 g·kg-1, 12.74 to 39.53 g·kg-1,2.13 to 7.60 g·kg-1, 10.07 to 38.71 g·kg-1, respectively, in Baoli Golf County Park, and ranged from 296.82 to 513.97 g·kg-1, 12.40 to 33.99 g·kg-1, 0.88 to 5.51 g·kg-1 and 4.09 to30.81 g·kg-1, respectively, in Yunshangliying Park.There were differences in soil nutrient contents among different plants. p H, soil organic matter content, total nitrogen content, total phosphorus content, total potassium content, available nitrogen content, available phosphorus content, available potassium content ranged from 7.95 to 8.28, 9.56 to 20.4 g·kg-1, 0.47 to 1 g·kg-1, 0.22 to 0.45 g·kg-1,4.86 to 10.76 g·kg-1, 32.9 to 75.78 mg·kg-1, 2.42 to 32.93 mg·kg-1, 71.89 to 247.8 mg·kg-1,respectively, in Xiangzhangyuan Park, those ranged from 6.63 to 8.28, 6.21 to 105.68 g·kg-1,0.45 to 3.68 g·kg-1, 0.24 to 0.85g·kg-1, 0.24 to 0.85g·kg-1, 20.94 to 196.43 mg·kg-1, 7.93 to108.68 mg·kg-1, 59.43 to 219.9 mg·kg-1, respectively, in Baoli Golf County Park, and ranged from 7.80 to 8.36, 6.61 to 26.71 g·kg-1, 0.34 to 1.35 g·kg-1, 0.17 to 0.58 g·kg-1, 5.32 to 30.75 g·kg-1, 24.53 to 139.2 mg·kg-1, 2.42 to 40.95 mg·kg-1, 67.55 to 322.73 mg·kg-1,respectively,in Yunshangliying Park.Photosynthetic physiological characteristics were significantly different among most plants. Pn, Gs, Ci, Tr, Ls, WUE ranged from 1.4 to 8.06 umol·m-2·s-1, 0.027 to 0.187 mol·m-2·s-1, 235.52 to 326.83 umol·mol-1, 0.48 to 2.18 mmol·m-2·s-1, 0.18 to 0.41, 2.40 to 7.39umol·mol-1, respectively, in Xiangzhangyuan Park, those ranged from 1.69 to 5.96 umol·m-2·s-1, 0.01 to 0.101 mol·m-2·s-1, 175.52 to 322.1 umol·mol-1, 0.13 to 0.96 mmol·m-2·s-1, 0.19 to 0.56, 5.24 to 16.9 umol·mol-1, respectively, in Baoli Golf County Park, and ranged from1.56 to 6.12 umol·m-2·s-1, 0.009 to 0.082 mol·m-2·s-1, 123.32 to 296.47 umol·mol-1, 0.12 to0.94 mmol·m-2·s-1, 0.26 to 0.69, 4.6 to 16.64 umol·mol-1, respectively, in Yunshangliying Park.Chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics were significantly different among most plants. Fm, Y?II?, ETR, Y?NO?, NPQ ranged from 440.33 to 1680.33, 0.09 to 0.23, 5.4 to14.63, 0.39 to 0.68, 0.37 to 1.12, respectively, in Xiangzhangyuan Park, those ranged from248.11 to 708.33, 0.1 to 0.33, 6.2 to 20.53, 0.26 to 0.59, 0.52 to 2.08, respectively, in Baoli Golf County Park, and ranged from 476 to 1330, 0.03 to 0.2, 1.69 to 16.29, 0.33 to 0.47,0.86 to 1.8, respectively, in Yunshangliying Park.Correlation analysis showed that a significantly positive relationship existed between TK content and Pn in Xiangzhangyuan Park and Baoli Golf County Park, while soil organic matter content, total nitrogen content and available nitrogen content were significantly positively correlated with Pn.Principal component analysis of characteristic indexes showed that photosynthesis ability decreased in the order of Codiaeum variegatum > Tabernaemontana divaricata >Excoecaria cochinchinensis > Cordyline fruticosa > Gardenia jasminoides > Alpinia sanderae > Hibiscus rosa-sinensis > Fagraea ceilanica > Hibiscus rosa-sinensis ‘cooper' >Dianella ensifolia ‘White Variegated' > Schefflera arboricola in Xiangzhangyuan Park, in the order of Begonia semperflorens > Salvia splendens > Hibiscus rosa-sinensis ‘cooper' >Cordyline fruticosa > Allemanda schottii > Duranta repens ‘Dwarf Yellow' > Schefflera arboricola ‘variegata' > Alpinia sanderae > Duranta repens ‘variegata' > Fagraea ceilanica > Excoecaria cochinchinensis in Baoli Golf County Park, and in the order of Ixora chinensis > Cordyline fruticosa > Neomarica gracilis > Pilea notata > Syngonium podophyllum > Schefflera arboricola > Hibiscus rosa-sinensis > Alpinia sanderae >Duranta repens ‘Dwarf Yellow' > Dianella ensifolia ‘White Variegated' > Excoecariacochinchinensis > Ficus microcarpa ‘Golden Leaves' > Philodendron xanadu >Aphelandra ruellia in Yunshangliying Park, respectively.
