Seabuckthorn(Hippophae rhamnosides)is a deciduous shrub ordung arunga. The shrub is drought tolerant and anti-sand,which has been widely used in soil and water conservation and desert greening.Seabuckthorn is rich in nutrients and bioactive substances and iswidely used in many fields including food, medicine, light industry, aerospace, agriculture, animal husbandry and fish industry. This shrub species is included in the People's Republic of China Pharmacopoeia and the Ministry of Health medicine as a medicinal homologousplant. It is also a traditional herb species used in the Tibetan medicine and Mongolian medicine.Shanxi is the largest province of seabuckthorn resources in China, but has only one subspecies, the Chinese seabuckthorn. The Chinese seabuckthorn subspecies is short stipe,thin-skinned and prickly, and is difficult to pick up for further development and usage. Therefore, seven cultivars of H.rhamnosides were introduced from the Ordos Experimental Zone of Hippocampus Management Center of the Ministry of Water Resources to the Taigu experimental area(37 ° 31 'north latitude). In this study, thegrowth performance, phenological observation, fruit and leaf conditions, photosynthetic rate,VC content of the fruit, rutin content ofthe leaves of the seven seabuckthorn varieties were dete rmined and the local Chinese sea buckthorn was used as the control. The adaptability,as well as the growth characteristics and nutritional differences of the introduced seabuckthorn cultivars and the Chinese seabuckthorn in the Taigu experimental area provides the basis for the promotion of planting seabuckthorn in Shanxi. The results have showed that the sprouting period, flowering period, leaf stage, shoot growth period and deciduous stage of Hybrid seabuckthorn cultivars were all about 10 days earlier than that of the Chinese seabuckthorn.Over all the annual growth period ofthese seven cultivars of H.rhamnosideswas20 days of less than the Chinese seabuckthorn. The fruit colour phase, fruit maturity of the seabuckthorn cultivars were two months earlier than the Chinese seabuckthorn, and the Heterosis NO.12 was about 1 month earlier. The photosynthetic rates have showed that all the seabuckthorn varieties had a "lunch break" phenomenon, which the photosynthetic rate of the Heterosis NO.12 was dominantin June and July, and is significantly different from other varieties. From the microstructure of the seabuckthorn leaves, all seabuckthorn cultivars in the Taigu test area were clear to define the structures. The epidermal cells, stomata, guard cells, palisade tissue and sponge tissue were observed.Mesophyll cells were rich in the chloroplasts. The color of leaves wasnormal. The thick angle tissues of the main veins, parenchyma, xylem, bark fibres, forming layers were observed.Based on the result, cultivars of the sea buckthorn are suitablefor growing in the Taigu test area. From the cross section examination of the fruits and seeds of the studied seabuckthorn species, the seabuckthorn cultivars of the Taigu test area are well grown and developed. The contents of rutin in the leaves and VC in the fruits of the seabuckthorns were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC).In the hybrid seabuckthorn cultivars, the highest content of rutin was 0.1327%,which belongs to the Heterosis NO.12.The rutin levels were generally consistent with the Chinese seabuckthorn of 0.1361% for female and 0.1466% for male.Heterosis NO.1 0 and NO.1 2 have had the highest VC content of 1450 mg/100 g,which was similar to the Chinese sea buckthorn VC content of 1660 mg/100 g.Based on our field investigation, morphological study, photosynthetic rate determination and composition analysis of heterotopic seabuckthorn in Taigu test area, all the hybrid seabuckthorn cultivars were proven to be suitable forplanting in the north of latitude 37°.The over all best performed cultivar was Heterosis NO.12.
