Objective As a member of the third, fourth, and fifth group of china’s most renowned inheritors and disseminators of traditional Chinese medical thoughts, professor Shao Rongshi graduated from Nanjing Traditional Chinese Medical College at her early age, then she studied under professor Zhang Zesheng, an successor of Menghe traditional Chinese medicine. Finally, she succeeded Zhang as a master of traditional medicine and became an expert at treating internal diseases including dysfunctions of spleen, stomach, etc. Like Zhang, Shao’s prescriptions seldom involved heavy doses and were always miracles to patients since she attached high importance to the protection of patients’stomach and spleen. My research focused on the typical medical cases made by Professor Shao in treating UC, when I was studying under her from the outpatient. By analyzing her diagnostic views and laws of prescriptions, the principles of diagnosing and treating UC was concluded, to make it better to inherit and carry forward. Methods This project involves a collection of 66 cases with a total of 160 visits at the outpatient, using computer techniques to input the initial clinical data in a given mode and applying Microsoft Office Excel, V3.2 Medcase data mining system to dissect the pathogenesis of the cases, therapeutic principles, prescriptions as well as the objective indexes obtained through enteroscopy. Moreover, in reference to related documents, gains in depth about his academic ideas were made by associating professor’s interpretation from an earlier time with her clinical practices in UC treatment. Results By analyzing 66 cases with a total of 160 visits, the mechanisms of UC includes a wet bowel exposed to heat and cold, malfunction due to spleen asthenia, yan-deficiency in spleen and kidney, imbalance of liver and spleen, spleen asthenia from dampness-heat etc. As the statistics indicate, Medications prescribed by Professor Shao for treating UC amount to 95, among which those rank top thirty-one hence frequently used consist mostly of medicine with effects on benefiting qi and activating spleen, removing heat, warming Zhong-jiao to dispel wetness, regulating qi and collaterals, resolving stagnation and blood stasis, eliminating wind and dampness, dispelling food stagnation etc. Herbs like Weibuxiang, Baishu, Duanhuaruishi, Xianhecao, Semen coicis, Chenpi,Kuihua, Bai-ji ect. are on the list too. Combined with the teaching of the teacher, with the teacher, the data analysis results, the relevant literature,a conclusion could be drawn that Shao emphasized on syndrome differentiation and treatment clinically. She attached high importance to essential spleen deficiency with consideration of problems in relevant internal organs and was adept at dispelling wetness in various ways. Meanwhile, she was an advocator of collateral regulation and lining protection as well as microcosmic syndrome differentiation. She was such a master that she took the initiative to create decoction on her own for coloclysis on a basis external treatment. Furthermore, Shao advocated living conditioning and concluded a variety of replenishments to lessen stagnation. Her ideas as dampness dispelling, heat and cold differentiation, liver and spleen interconnections, warming the kidney and spleen, lifting depression and decreasing the dirt, resolving stagnation. Conclusions This study summarizes professor Shao Rongshi in the treatment of ulcerative colitis, finding and examining clearly the deficiency or excess, heat or cold, specimens or whether it was acute or chronic, clinically. When prescribing, one should not only be guided by the ancient principles but also use them creatively and flexibly according to the symptoms present. Whereas, the 9 methods for treating diarrhea, introduced by Lee-zhongzi from the Ming dynasty were explored by Shao and used flexibly for treatment of UC. As years went by, she became well versed in it, thus acquiring much experience in this regard. Professor Shao regarded the etiology of UC was not simply confined to the colon. Though it occurred in colon, the true etiology rooted in the spleen, and probably closely related to kidneys, lungs and liver. Hence the treatment should involve coordinating functions of other internal organs. Accordingly, shao paid high attention to spleen replenishment and protection. Meanwhile, she pointed out:the key to treat spleen-asthenia was to activate the spleen-energy instead of a harmful excess replenishment. Therefore, Patients with Yan-deficiency in kidney and spleen responded quickly to Xiansha Liujun, Lizhong decoction and Sishen pills modified. However, those who had uncoordinated liver and spleen should be differentiated as having a stagnated or softened liver. For the stagnated, a modified Tongxie formula was required; for those having an unusually-softening liver; a modified Shaoyao-Gancao decoction could be effective on soothing and spleen-energy activation. The colon-dampness was thought as the leading factor responsible for UC by the professor. Since dampness could be caused by heat or cold, a careful differential diagnosis should be made-dispelling the cold by warming and removing the heat by cooling. It was essential to classify the degree of cold and heat during the course of treatment. Based on the features of UC, shao summed up her experience in treating UC that collateral regulation and lining protection as well as microcosmic syndrome differentiation plus an external treatment such as coloclysis, together with a tender care, were sufficient to cure UC. In regard to this, specific medicines such as Jianpi-huazhi pills, Chang-anning granules, Zhixueling etc. were invented by her. All of these reflected shao’s clinical ideas and prescription laws in the field of UC treatment.
