Abstract/Summary:
ObjectiveIn this study,by using the surface electromyography technique and analysis system we investigated the difference of amplitude and duration in submental muscles and infrahyoid muscles activities during pharyngeal swallowing between normal adults and post-stroke dysphagia(PSD)patients,the difference of amplitude and duration in muscle contraction during PSD patients swallowing different types of food,the difference of amplitude and duration in muscle contraction between the affected side and healthy side during PSD patients swallowing.Methods 22 clinical confirmed PSD patients and 18 controls of healthy were collected with random controlled method.By using Canada Thought Technology Company MyoTrac Infiniti electromyographic biofeedback instrument(dual channel)surface electromyographic signal of muscles were collected in the resting state,swallowing saliva,swallowing water(5 ml),and swallowing paste food(5 ml)between two groups of subjects.Then we analyzed the average amplitude and the duration and made comparison between the two groups by SPSS 21.0 version.The significant level was 0.05 in paired sample T test for the comparison within group,the independent sample T test for the comparison between groups and the rank-sum T test for rank data.ResultsThere was significant difference in the amplitude(P<0.05)and duration(P<0.05)of submental muscles and infrahyoid muscles activities during pharyngeal swallowing between PSD group and control group.There was significant difference in swallowing paste food and swallowing water for affected side of PSD patients(P<0.05).Three different types of food had significant difference in the swallowing amplitude of affected side of suprahyoid muscles(P<0.05).The duration was longer in swallowing paste food than in swallowing saliva(P<0.05).There was no significant difference in the amplitude and duration of muscles contraction between the affected side and the healthy side of PSD patients(P<0.05).Conclusions By using the surface electromyography technique and analysis system,the average amplitude and duration of submental and infrahyoid muscles can screen and evaluate swallowing function,reflect the complexity and the persistence time of the hyoid bone and the larynx in movement,and predict the risk of aspiration of PSD patients.sEMG could be applied in PSD patients as a non-invasive,simple,rapid tool in assessing the activities of related muscles during pharyngeal swallowing.
