Objective: To compare the pharmacognosy, antiviral and antioxidant activities in vivo and vitro of eight medicinal Pyrrosia plants, including P.lingua,P.petiolosa,P.sheareri,P.tonkinensis,P.gralla,P.porosa,P.subfurfuracea and P.heteractis.And furtherly, the principle active compositions were quantitatively analyzed.Method: To compare the pharmacognosy characteristics of different Pyrrosia species, including the plant morphology, microscopic characteristics,SEM characteristics, and physicochemical parameters. The extracts from different Pyrrosia species were uesd to examine the antioxidant activity in vivo by the methods of DPPH radical scavenging, phosphomolybdenum, reducing power assay and hydroxyl radical scavenging, while the values of SOD,MDA and GSH-Px were in vitro determined. The MTT assay was used to evaluate the antiviral activity. The active chemical components were analyzed by HPLC.Results: The results showed significant differences in the morphological characters of the plants, the type of xylem vascular, the number of vascular bundles in stems and petioles, the number of stellate hairs, the surface of spore and the stoma index. The result of antioxidant activity showed that the capacity of ethanol extracts was significantly higher than those of chloroform, ethyl acetate and aqueous extracts. The antioxidant activity was different in the different Pyrrosia species. In the hydroxide radical scavenging activity, the value of IC50 in the Pyrrosia tonkinensis(90.25 ± 1.26 ?g·m L-1)was significant lower than that in positive control(104.39 ± 0.11 ?g·m L-1).It proved which the capacity of antioxidant activity, and the in vivo test verified the result further. In the aspect of antiviral, only P.petiolosa,P.gralla and P.subfurfuracea showed a certain antiviral activity. The active constituents such as chlorogenic acid, vanillic acid and mangiferin were determinedin Pyrrosia species by HPLC,however, the contents of the same constituent in different species were different. Conclusions: Our results revealed that Pyrrosia species could be identified by some characteristics of pharmacognosy. The present study on the antioxidant and antiviral activities contributes to the standardization and verification of these medicinal materials further.
