Objective: To investigate the effect of compound kushen injection on clinical efficacy,radiation-induced lung injury and immune function for patients with esophageal cancer during radiotherapy. Methods:Using forward-looking clinical research methods, summarized in locally advanced esophageal cancer with radiotherapy combined kushen injection(TK group)and individual use of radiotherapy(T group)and clinical data of two forms of treatment, observation of patients clinical efficacy,radiation-induced lung injury and immune function.Results:88 esophageal cancer patients were randomly divided into two groups,45 cases in radiotherapy combined kushen injection(TK group)and 43 cases in individual use of radiotherapy(T group). In the TK group, the overall response rate was 44 of 45(97.8%)with complete response in 26(57.8%)patients and partial response in 18(40%)patients.In the T group, the overall response rate was 43 of 41(95.3%)with complete response in 18(41.9%)patients and partial response in 25(58.1%)patients.The complete response in the TK group were significantly higher than those in the T group(57.8%vs 41.8%,x 2=4.57,P<0.05).The incidences of level 0,1,2 and 3 acute radiation-induced lung injury were 15(34.9%),21(48.8%),5(11.6%)and 2(4.7%)respectively for T group and 28(62.2%),15(33.3%),1(2.25%),1(2.25%)for TK group by the end of third month of medication. There were significant difference between the two groups. In TK group,CD8+cells were markedly declined, and the CD4+/CD8+ ratio showed an elevation trend p(P<0.05 and P<0.01)..Conclusions:Compound Kushen injection could improve complete response of radiotherapy and immune function of esophageal cancer patients, and significantly decreased incidences of acute radiation-induced lung injury.
