Transversus abdominis plane block(TAPB)is considered a promising new method of regional anesthesia, which can improve analgesic efficacy and reduce the dose requirements for single agents for the patients undergoing the abdominal surgery.Recently, this technique is gaining wide acceptance in the abdominal operations, such as liver surgery, biliary tract surgery, gastrointestinal tract operation, pelvic operation and so on.Traditionally,TAPB has been performed by relying on landmark identification of nerves, which required rich personal experience for anesthesiologists and had a low success rate. The application of ultrasound guidance in TAP block increase the accuracy of injection and decrease the risk of injury to surrounding structures, besides the training period of this technique is greatly reduced for anesthesiologists. We describe in this article, the anatomy of transversus abdominis plane, the ultrasound guidance technique for TAPB,the anesthetic agent and its dose/concentration and volume of injection, the application of thistechnique and its Indications and contra-indications.
