Objective: To investigate the effect of hyperthyroidism on anxiety, depression and quality of life in patients, and to explore the correlation between anxiety, depression in patients and the quality of life.Methods:1 Subjects: Eighty patients with Graves disease(23 males and 57 females with an average age of 39.45±9.41 years)treated in Department of Endocrinology, the Third Affiliated Hospital of Hebei North University from December 2015 to December 2016 were selected as the hyperthyroidism group, and 80 healthy people(26 males and 54 females with an average age of 41.16±10.37 years)with normal thyroid function were selected as the control group.2 Determination of thyroid function: For patients with Graves disease and healthy people in the control group, the level of Total Triiodothyronine(TT3),Total Thyroxine(TT4),Free Triiodothyronine(FT3),Free Thyroxine(FT4),thyroid stimulating hormone(TSH)and thyrotropin receptor antibody in the serum would be determined.3 Evaluation of anxiety, depression and quality of life: Hamilton Anxiety Scale(HAMA)and Hamilton Depression Scale(HAMD)were applied to evaluate the mental status of patients in the hyperthyroidism group and the control group at the first treatment. And the quality of life of the patients was assessed by SF-36 scale.According to HAMA score, the patients were divided into two groups: anxiety group(?14)and non-anxiety group(<14).According to HAMA score, the patients were divided into two groups:depression group(?20)and non-depression group(<20).After the treatment of Thiamazole Tablets for all patients with Graves disease, their thyroid function returned to normal within 4 months. After half a year,HamiltonAnxiety Scale(HAMA),Hamilton Depression Scale(HAMD)and SF-36 scale were employed to evaluate the mental status and quality of life of all patients.Result:1 Compared with the control group, the HAMA and HAMD scores of the patients in hyperthyroidism group were higher, but SF-36 score was lower. Both of the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).2 HAMA score of the patients was positively correlated with the level of FT3 in the serum(r=0.372,P < 0.05).HAMA score of the patients was positively correlated with the level of FT4 in the serum(r=0.293,P <0.05).The SF-36 score of anxiety group was significantly lower than that of non-anxiety group and HAMA score of the patients was negatively correlated with SF-36(r=-0.437,P<0.05).3 HAMD score of the patients was positively correlated with the level of FT3 in the serum(r=0.494,P < 0.05).HAMD score of the patients was positively correlated with the level of FT4 in the serum(r=0.336,P <0.05).The SF-36 score of the depression group was significantly lower than that of non-depression group, and HAMD score of the patients was negatively correlated with SF-36(r=-0.587,P<0.05).4 After six months' treatment, the thyroid function was restored to normal.HAMA and HAMD scores of hyperthyroid patients were lower than those before the treatment, but SF-36 score was higher. Both of the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusion: The incidence of anxiety and depression in patients with hyperthyroidism is higher than that of the healthy people. The degree of anxiety and depression in patients with hyperthyroidism are closely related with the level of FT3 and FT4 in the serum. The quality of life of patients with hyperthyroidism declines, which are closely related with the degree of anxiety and depression. After the treatment with anti-thyroid drugs, the anxiety and depression of hyperthyroid patients have been markedly relieved, and the quality of life has been improved with the recovery of the thyroid function.
