Research Of Translation Strategies On Overseas Study Materials

With the rapid growth of economic globalization and the deepening of higher education internationalization, international communication and cooperation have become increasingly extensive in the field of studying abroad. Studying abroad is emerging as one of the major ways to enhance students' learning ability and intercultural competence, which has gradually become a consensus among parents. Today, more and more institutes of international education and studying abroad programs are introduced to China, which plays an increasingly important role in enhancing economic development and deepening internationalization of higher education. Accordingly, domestic demands for translating overseas study materials are on the increase. However, many educational experts involved in overseas study field have no time to translate overseas study texts. Therefore, professional translators certainly undertake the important mission of promoting international education and communication as well as analyzing text features and translation strategies. As studying abroad enrollment trends have shown that significantly increasing numbers of students and demands for translating relative materials, the overall and systematic research on translation strategies is of great significance.This paper is an overseas study material translation practice report. The thesis, taking the program of Sino-American overseas study and communication as an example that the author participates in, selecting materials from this program as an object of case study, firstly makes a detailed description of the translation project background, two parties and significance of the project. Secondly, the thesis illustrates linguistic, stylistic, and cultural features of different types of overseas study materials. Finally, the thesis explores effective translation strategies employed in the translation, including communicative translation approach and essential techniques of literal translation, free translation, amplification, omission, conversion and use of euphemism by presenting specific examples during the practical translation, as well as special methods of creating templates and creating terminology database. Only in this way can translated versions be accurate and smooth, and the quality of translated versions be accomplished nicely.In the end, the author makes a summary on the translation project indicating that the translation project is accomplished by adopting suitable translation strategies. At the same time, through this translation practice, the author fully appreciates that translation is filled with hardships and challenges, and then suggests that translators should master basic translation strategies with strong comprehensive quality. Meanwhile, the translator should also practice a lot to improve translating ability for being a qualified translator.Findings of the research on this translation practice may provide support for translators who are working on overseas study materials translation and may be of great promotion for studying abroad, potential cooperation and cross-cultural communication.
