The political and writing career of Guo Moruo can be split into 2 phases by the year of 1950. In the earlier phase, Guo's works are characterized by intense critical spirit and strong desire for personality liberation. In the latter phase, there is an obvious transition in his political value, academic principle and personal mentality. The transition contributes the complexity of Guo's life track as an important litterateur in Chinese Contemporary Literature History. The influence of Speech on literature and Art Forum in Yan An by Mao on Chinese Contemporary literature also contributed to the change in Guo's Literary creation. The changes in political climate prompted Guo to adapt his poetry accordingly since 1950's. The patterns, poetic theories of his works vary by the ‘supreme instructions' of Chairman Mao in different political stages. He catered to tastes of political rulers amid endless political movements as an advocator for the mainstream culture and showcased dazzling productivity in propaganda poetry. Some works, such as ‘New China Ode', ‘All flowers bloom together', ‘Collection of ever green' and so on, are clearly full of political slogans and have been widely recognized as propaganda cliche. The shift of poetic image in his poems reflects the shift in his cultural identification from a pure litterateur to a party mouthpiece. As a politically, societally prestigious scholar, Guo was associated to a series of political events in the second half of the 20 th century in China. Though common people and the officials have recognized Guo in vastly different ways, time will be the fairest judge for his poetry as an objective presence.
