Associated with the unprecedented prosperity of notes in Northern Song Dynasty,the notes preface and postscript that most of the notes in Northern Song Dynasty contain, had also presented a splendid sight. The preface and postscript, which is a window of notes and has irreplaceable literary and historical value, provides a multi-dimensional perspective to broad and deep literary phenomenon for us and a first-hand material for our research on notes theory and social history. As an independent object of study, the notes preface and postscript in Northern Song Dynasty, which needs special attention and discussion, however, has not been widely attached importance to yet so far. And the study on it is still a weak link. With these considerations, a comprehensive study on the notes preface and postscript in Northern Song Dynasty, written by scholars from Song Dynasty and posterity, has been conducted in this paper. After a systematic overview of the notes preface and postscript in Northern Song Dynasty, the social and cultural factors leading to the prosperity of Song notes has been further explored. Meanwhile, in-depth discussion has been performed on the specific historical value and hidden notes concept of the notes preface and postscript in Northern Song Dynasty.
