Chinese and English differ at lexical, syntactic and grammatical levels. Especially in impromptu speeches, Chinese speakers may repeat, hesitate, or articulate incomplete sentences. Interpreters need to analyze and remove redundancies and ambiguity, reorganize the sentence structure and make the logic more explicit so as to express the intended message.The Interpretive Theory was put forward in the 1960s. The theory holds that translation and interpreting follows the pattern of comprehension, deverbalization and expression. This thesis studies the correlation between the extent of deverbalization and the quality of C-E simultaneous interpreting under the condition of impromptu speeches.The hypothesis is that the extent of deverbalization is positively correlated with the quality of simultaneous interpreting. An empirical study of 7 respondents is conducted to test the hypothesis. Qualitative and quantitative methods are used to analyze the results. The study verifies the hypothesis. Deverbalization helps improve accuracy, express clearly and logically, maintain coherence of the speech and deliver the intended message in a natural manner. Four forms of deverbalization are used. They are restructuring, explanation, simplification and innovation.The results may provide some reference for further empirical researches on simultaneous interpreting, and encourage more students to provide better interpreting through deverbalization.
