The French interpretive theory holds that the process of interpreting is comprised of comprehension, deverbalization and reproduction. It regards interpreting as transmission of message and "sense". To reach this goal, the interpreter is obliged to "forget" the form of source language,"deverbalize" and interpret the information that the speaker intends to get across, expressing the meaning freely without source language interference in the target language. Based on the understanding of the interpretive theory, this study looks at the influence of deverbalization on the quality of Chinese-to-English SI of Chinese colloquial speech. The author invites6students from GSTI of Beijing Foreign Studies University majoring in SI to participate in the experiment and chooses a part of Ma Yun’s speech at the Netrepreneur Summit in2012as the interpreting material. The results of the experiment are as follows:the more the interpreter deverbalizes, the higher the overall quality and faithfulness is; the influence of deverbalization on expression is relatively small, and no obvious positive correlation between the two is found; among different deverbalization skills, Reformulation and Innovation are most widely adopted; and the more Innovation is adopted, the higher quality of interpreting is. The experiment proves that deverbalization can serve as strong guidance for Chinese-to-English SI of colloquial speeches.
