This paper aims to explore how interpreters proactively apply a mix of strategies to handle impromptu insertions and their corresponding performance during Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting in formal settings.Impromptu insertions, here defined as paragraphs or discourse with intensive colloquialisms, commonly in the form of telling stories, jokes, sharing experiences or explaining allegories bear certain significance in the context. The abrupt change of register, the innate differences between Chinese and English...constitute quite a challenge for on-site interpreters, especially in the case of source texts marked by parataxis and implicitness. The unpredictability of impromptu insertions calls for greater flexibility, sensibility and analytical skills of the interpreters. The phenomenon is therefore of value for research. In the second chapter, this article reviews and summarizes relevant literature and introduces the triangular model of the Interpretive Theory, based on which experiments are conducted.Altogether 6 MTI students in GSTI have been selected as subjects to undergo three different C-E interpreting tests.Their recordings are collected with paragraphs containing typical impromptu insertions transcripted for performance grading and further quantitative analysis. The ear-voice span(EVS)of the subjects are also calculated for comparison. Finally, respondents go through an interview as part of the qualitative analysis. The result echos the hypothesis. In handling impromptu insertions during C-E simultaneous interpreting,high-scoring interpreters tend to prolong EVS,employ various deverbalization strategies such as restructuring, simplification, explanation and innovation and focus more on griping the gist, the logic and the message. They can judge according to the circumstances and come up with a near-equivalent delivery based on a proper weighing of cognitive loads. In the last chapter, the study concludes by providing practical guidance for relevant interpretation training and self-learning.
