On Hidden Curriculum In Foreign Language Textbooks Of Universities And Colleges

Hidden curriculum,since its birth,has aroused wide attention of scholars in educational field at home and aboard.With its infinite contents,hidden curriculum makes great influence on students‘ moral and intellectual education.At present,researches on hidden curriculum in foreign language textbooks mainly focus on elementary education.Domestic researches on foreign language textbooks emphasize on explicit curriculum.The present paper makes a case study of A New English Grammar Coursebook and explores the hidden curriculum in this textbook by interviewing its users namely the students and teachers and analyzing contents of the book.Results show that there exist a large number of contents of hidden curriculum in the textbook.They are demonstrated in the following four aspects: physical form,mental influence,knowledge improvement and quality cultivation.These four aspects can be further divided into eight directions: appearance,contents,language use,literature,culture,knowledge of other fields,values,critical thinking and innovative ability.Hidden curriculum in foreign language textbooks can be analyzed according to these four aspects and eight directions which is the proposed theoretical framework for analyzing hidden curriculum in foreign language textbooks.A set of questionnaires is designed to verify the effectiveness of the framework through investigating students who use A New English Grammar Coursebook.Results confirm the effectiveness of the framework.At last,positive and negative impacts of hidden curriculum on students as well as implications of hidden curriculum in foreign language textbooks on foreign language education are discussed.
