Tu Fu is a great poet in Tang dynasty. He writes more than one thousand and four hundred poems which are popular among the public in his whole life. Tu Fu's style is generally regarded as Contemplation and pause and inflexion. This dissertation intends to have a diachronic research from the perspective of reception history. It uses poets and scholars' discussion as the main materials which are hardly seen from past dynasties to clarify the process of establishment of Contemplation and pause and inflexion.The introduction part firstly discusses the present situation of academia's research towards contemplation and pause and inflexion, then it analyze the value and meaning of this paper, at last it declares some problems related to the original meaning of contemplation and pause and inflexion and the division of this paper.This paper will divide into there stages: Song dynasty, Yuan and Ming dynasty, and Qing dynasty according to the specif situation of all dynasties reception and explanation. The first chapter basically expresses that Scholars in Song dynasty expand the the contemplation and pause and inflexion's word meanings. Although contemplation and pause and inflexion was firstly presented by Tu Fu in Tang Dynasty written in the Speaking of Memorial Concerning Praising the Eagle, it begins to become a basic topic in Song dynasty which gains almost no attention from scholars in Tang dynasty. Scholars in the Northern Song dynasty expands the connotation completely about the contemplation and pause and inflexion. They put classic and traditional poetic content into the contemplation which originally belongs to the field of phonology. At the same time, the rule of Chinese traditional poems was endowed on the pause and inflexion. They highlight that the noble character and the erudite knowledge of Tu Fu are the main reasons which promotes him to use the the pause and inflexion skilfully. Yan Yu in the Southern Song dynasty turns his focus on Tu Fu's own quality to the content of his poems, turns the original profound construction in the pause and inflexion's meaning into the style of poetry, presenting the opinion that Tu Fu's poems' style is contemplation and pause and inflexion which is different from Li Bai's creating style which is fluent and natural. The second chapter mainly analyzes that scholars in Yuan and Ming dynasty inherited and developed Yan Yu's opinion of contemplation and pause and inflexion style which is explained in terms of emotion and aesthetic. They hold the opinion that contemplation and pause and inflexion is the natural expression of Tu Fu's emotion. Although Li Mengyang, He Jingming, and several scholars debate the contemplation and pause and inflexion from the perspective of circulation, Hu Yingling, Yang Shen who learns from the leader of Chang Lin poetic school, and Tang Shun in Tang and Song school defend for contemplation and pause and inflexion in terms of opinion which means literature is changing according to the time and everyone has its own style of poems. During the process of debating and defending, scholars in Ming dynasty basically acknowledge the opinion that Tu Fu's poetic style is contemplation and pause and inflexion. The third chapter concludes the opinions of scholars from previous dynasties towards contemplation and pause and inflexion. In the early Qing dynasty, He Yisun formally proposed that Tu Fu's poems are contemplation and pause and inflexion and Wu Zhantai expands the opinion in details that considering contemplation as meaning and pause and reflexion as rules. Scholars in Qing dynasty conclude the former generations' scholars' explanations towards Tu Fu's poetic style from aspects of emotion, poetic rules, artistic conception, poetry and poem are in the same way and so on. They pay attention to Tu Fu's way of writing using the thinking method of contemplation, and at the same time they propose new opinion in the aspects of artistic conception and the thought that poetry and poem are in the same way. As key points of Tu Fu's poetry style, contemplation and pause and inflexion's connotation has been basically established.
