The thesis mainly addresses inappropriate pauses in consecutive interpreting under thetheory of Daniel Gile’s Effort Model. The thesis divides pauses into appropriate pauses andinappropriate pauses. Due to the limitation of the interpreters’ attention, disfluency oftenoccurs in the process of interpreting (namely, inappropriate pauses). The thesis aims atfinding out the reasons behind these inappropriate pauses in interpreting in the aspects ofsource language input, information processing, target language output, etc. Furthermore,the thesis explores strategies to reduce inappropriate pauses. The strategies include theimprovement of listening comprehension ability, analysis ability, note-taking ability andspeaking ability.
