| Wutai Mountain Buddhism has a long and profound history,the region spread a lot of legends about Wu Ye,and Manjushri as well as the emperor.Among of those,as a typical local belief,the faith in Wu Ye has distinct regional characteristics.According to legend,Wu Ye is the fifth son of the East China Sea Dragon King,he is conferred the title----“Long Can Wu Ye" by imperial edict in the Qing Dynasty.Since that time,the faith in Wu Ye spread widely in the Wutai Mountain area until now.At present,studies on the faith in Wu Ye are few,and the literatures are even scarcer.Locals believe that the faith in Wu Ye was exist since ancient times,however,deep consideration and discussion on the Buddhist origin and the development of faith in Wu Ye are lacking.Through fieldwork and historical literature,this paper investigates and analysis legend versions of faith in Wu Ye,the distribution and changes of Wu Ye temples,and daily worship activities.Then,from the historical origin between Buddhism,Taoism and Wu Ye,the paper try to discover the relationship between the faith in Wu Ye and the locals as well as the society in Wutai Mountain area,a place with a strong atmosphere of Buddhism and rich legends,attempting to discover the reasons of faith in Wu Ye and unprecedented prosperity of it at present from the unique local ecological point of view.The body part discusses from five aspects.Firstly,introduces the unique natural and cultural environment of faith in Wu Ye,explains the cultural property of Wu Ye from the perspective of the Dragon King belief;Secondly,the author elaborates the changes of Wu Ye temple in the region of Wutai Mountain by fieldwork investigation of the North Tai Guangji Dragon King Temple,Wu Ye's hometown,and Wu Ye Temple;Third,explain the "semi-standard" of faith in Wu Ye and ritual activities of geographical situation,analysis from standardization and localization of the faith in Wu fang Dragon King,and analysis according to Wu Ye Christmas temple ceremonies on May 13 and daily believers' activities in temple,so as to explore and analyse the relationship between these things and the faith in Wu Ye from the public point of view;Fourth,based on the contents of the temple ritual activity,to explain the generation of cultural complex of faith in Wu Ye from the ecological angle,combining the changes of Wu Ye temple,to analyze the ecological relationship between Wu Ye Temple and Buddhism temple,centring on the public explanation,to explore the reason of cultural complex's generation and the Buddhism temples' changes;The last part discusses the reason of the development and prosperity of faith in Wu Ye in the new era,mainly from the following three factors: the interaction between the legends and the faith of Wu Ye,Buddhism's acceptation as well as the promoting by secularization of faith in Wu Ye and the faith construction of local government and people.The conclusion part summarizes the study of full text,and concludes that the faith in Wu Ye is a faith activity based on the unique geographical conditions and profound Buddhist heritage in that area,and that the faith construction of the government and people is the main propelling force which results in the unprecedented prosperity of faith in Wu Ye in the new period. |
