A Report On Translating China's Ceramics

With the process of global integration, China gets more and more attention from the foreigners, especially the profound Chinese culture. As an ancient nation with 5000 years of civilization, Chinese ceramic culture sparkles in the endless flow of Chinese culture. The translation of the Chinese ceramic text becomes a bridge of ceramic culture exchange between China and the world.“China's ceramics” is an introduction to the development of Chinese ceramics, production methods and the Chinese ceramic culture. The translation of this book plays a certain role in the reference to the ceramic text translation.Based on Verschueren's Adaptation Theory, this paper analyzes the translation of China's ceramics from two aspects: linguistic structure and communicative context. Linguistic structure adaption includes the adaptation to the lexical level, the syntactic level and the stylistic level. Communicative context adaptation includes the ceramic text translation adaptation to the mental world, the physical world and the social world.Through this translation project, we find that the Adaptation Theory plays a guiding role in the translation of the ceramic text, especially in the ceramic terminologies and culture-loaded words translation. The Adaptation Theory expects us to use flexible translation methods in according to the requirements of the different language environment. In addition, the translator harvests a lot during the translation process. Translator should master relevant ceramic English words, comprehend the basic ceramic manufacturing technology and strengthen own language expression basis.
