Hua-Yi-Yi-Yu is an important Mongolian historical document in the 14th century. The feature of Hua-Yi-Yi-Yu, which uses Chinese characters to transcript Mongolian sounds, is quite similar to that of the Secret History of the Mongols. Therefore, the research of the Mongolian sounds by means of Chinese characters in Hua-Yi-Yi-Yu is of significant values, the research values can be found not only for Hua-Yi-Yi-Yu itself, but also for the Secret History of the Mongols.By using the statistic and comparative methods, this thesis makes a systematic research of the Chinese characters to transcript Mongolian sounds, and the features of the Mongolian sounds by means of Chinese characters in Hua-Yi-Yi-Yu. The thesis comprises five parts:Introduction, Chapter I, Chapter II, Chapter HI, and the Conclusion.In the Introduction, the significance of the thesis, the brief research background, research methods and the research values are given. Chapter I presents a systematic study of the different Chinese characters to transcript Mongolian similar sounds (syllables). Chapter II states the features of the Chinese characters to transcript Mongolian symbols, and discusses certain special Mongolian sounds with the aids of Chinese transcripts. Chapter III makes a comparative study of the Mongolian sounds by means of Chinese characters in both Hua-Yi-Yi-Yu and the Secret History of the Mongols. The last part concludes the research content of the thesis as a whole.
