A Study On The Features Of The Mongolian Transliteration For Chinese Characters In The Documents Of Uyghur-Type Mongolian

In ancient Mongolian documents, many instances of Mongolian transliteration forChinese characters can be found. To make a systematic research of the correspondingrelationship between the Mongolian transliteration and the sounds of Chinesecharacters, this study will be of great value to the phonetic study at the time toMongolian transliteration for the Chinese characters, and will be really valuable to thestudy of the Mongolian and Chinese phonetic evolution as well.Some scholars have expounded the issue related in their papers or works.Howewer, not the systematic research has been found. In order to elaborate thephonetic features of the Uyghur-type Mongolian in this paper, the textual research topronunciations of Chinese characters has been done, by making full use of theDictionary of Rhyming Words in Yuan Dynasty, the examples of the Mongoliantransliteration for the Chinese characters in the Mongolian documents are collectedand inducted.In the process of the Mongolian transliteration, the authentic Chinese sounds atthe time were embodied. When no corresponding transliteration in Mongolian were tobe found for the Chinese sounds, the closest phonetic transliteration were used instead.Thus, quite complex corresponding relationship between the Mongoliantransliteration and the sounds of the Chinese characters at that time appeared. Thisshows a number of issues related to the ancient Mongolian and the features of Chinesesounds. The transliteration features and manners in different documents areconsistent on the whole. Through analyzing and studying the issue in this paper, theMongolian transliteration system for the Chinese characters shows the features areconsummate, and norm in Uyghur-type Mongolian documents.
