Among the various elements of English teaching, the textbooks play the crucial role, which is the fundamental basis of the language teaching. Textbooks are main source of knowledge and meanwhile they are the one of the communication bridges between teachers and learners. With the opening of teaching materials market, the vocational teaching materials flourish and dozens of teaching materials of vocational college run into market.In order to obtain better learning resources, based on the research achievements of English teaching materials evaluation at home and abroad, the demand of the practical situation of our college, the school-based teaching materials—Higher Vocational English Course is evaluated systematically.Questions of this study include: 1. Do the school-based teaching materials meet the basic requirements of higher vocational English teaching? 2. Whether the current teaching materials meet the actual needs of our students and teachers? 3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the textbook? Which parts need to be improved so as to make better use of the materials?This research mainly adopted the methods of literature review and questionnaires. The evaluation on language knowledge of the current teaching material mainly conducted in the light of the basic requirements of higher vocational college. To investigate whether the textbook meet the requirements of students and teachers, this paper adopt the three questionnaires Grant designed which contains a student questionnaire and a teacher questionnaire.The objects of the questionnaire survey are students and teachers from the BaoTou Iron & Steel Vocational Technical College.The statistics analysis of the questionnaires have been done and make a conclusion about the frequency and percentage of the data.Research suggests that school-based teaching material of higher vocational college English course meet the basic demand of higher vocational English teaching and basically meet the needs of students and teachers. But there are also many shortcomings and the insufficiencies in the textbooks; teachers need make some adjustments in the teaching process.
