The ancient Chinese short essays have a long history and vary in form and content. They are exotic flowers in the history of Chinese literature and some of the essays written by the famous essayists can be regarded as gems of ancient Chinese classics. The report is based on the translation practice of twenty allegorical short essays of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.Firstly, the report makes an introduction to the background and significance of the research, and analyzes the main content of the source text as well as its linguistic features. Usually, the ancient Chinese short essays are terse and forceful articles with ironical words and refined thinking. The writers' sharp satire on society and reflection on life provide readers food for thought. The omission of the subject, object and preposition is quite common in the source text which is written in classical Chinese. Then, on the basis of Christiane Nord's translation-oriented text analysis and her methods of documentary translation and instrumental translation, the author completes the translation and case analysis. For instance, the translation of the cultural-loaded words, the translation of the appellative function and expressive function, etc. Finally, the author summarizes the experiences, gains and deficiencies during the process of the translation and hopes to make continuous improvement in the later translation practices.
