A Report On C-E Translation Of Twenty Short Essays Of The Ming And Qing Dynasties

Under the background of globalization, cultural soft power plays an increasingly prominent role in the competition of comprehensive national strength. Classics translation is one of the most direct means in response to the Chinese culture "going out" strategy. Although there are tremendous amount of proses of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, their English versions are far from enough, and their translation methods are to be further improved. This thesis is a translation report based on the twenty short essays of the Ming and Qing Dynasties translated by the author. Admist the backdrop of cultural globalization, the report not only analyzes the importance and linguistic features of short essays of the Ming and Qing Dynasties in response to the Chinese culture "going out" strategy, but also gives a systematic review about the pre-translation preparation, translation process as well as conclusion of the project. This translation practice is under the guidance of semantic and communicative translation, proposed by Peter Newmark. Multiple original sentences and versions have been applied to illustrate the translation strategies used by the translator from three aspects, namely word translation, long sentence translation and allusion translation, so as to achieve equivalent effects. On top of that, the thesis points out some lessons and gains from the project, aiming to provide references for similar essay translations in the future.
